Little Green Fingers - Food Map Container

The Food Map Container from design firm Food Map design may just be the perfect container garden - great for small hands and small gardens. The base of the container has been specially designed to let water drain quickly and evenly and it sits on rubber casters so it can be easily moved. It's made from 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (which as well as being non-toxic is also BPA and Phthalate-free) while the frame is made from recycled steel (big green thumbs up). The Lowdown - gDiapers

We've all heard that disposables aren't the greatest choice for the environment but now with all the buzz about water use the alternatives, cloth diapers, may not be so green after all (just think of all that laundry!) Enter gDiapers. They're fast becoming the diaper of choice for eco-mamas everywhere including Julia Roberts. If you're considering switching here's what you need to know.

What are they? They're made from a washable cotton outer "little g pant", a flushable, plastic-free diaper liner and a snap-in waterproof liner.

To flush or not to flush? If you can't flush it's OK to toss - because they're plastic-free they'll break down in around 90 days compared with 500 years for conventional disposables. (It's estimated that each baby will go through around 6,000 diapers so that's a lot of landfill). You can even compost the wet ones - they'll break down in 50 - 150 days - and apparently your soil with love the nutrients.

Won't they cause, ahem, a clog? There is a knack to getting the flushing bit working and it does involve a bit of tearing and stirring which may be a bit much for the squeamish (I'm thinking of my husband here) at least to begin with. Just think of the greater good (and keep a plunger handy)!

Can they be used at nighttime? Possible nighttime leaks is one area where a lot of gDiaper fans admit they can have problems (but then again some disposables aren't so great either). The makers of gDiaper recommend doubling up and using two of the flushable inserts.

What's the cost? The gDiapers Starter Kit is a great way to see if they're for you. It comes with two "little g pants", ten flushable diaper refills and a user guide for $26.99. If you do decide it's for you then you will probably need around 6 pairs of "little g pants" ($18.99 each) and you'll need to stock up on the flushable diaper refills - a small pack contains 40 and the medium and large packs contain 32 ($14.49 for a pack or $52 for a case).
